ABOUT US

Located in beautiful Santa Fe, New Mexico, the High Desert Basset Hounds enjoy four distinct seasons and the crisp, clean air of the 7000 foot elevation. Our Hounds are not kenneled, so they can move freely between the fenced yard, garage, heated "Hound Room" and (very) often the house. They enjoy frequent outings and we take daily walks in the hills of our neighborhood.

We've had Bassets since 1963 (never less than two at a time), and have grown to love them more with each passing year. Our respective careers never allowed time for showing, but retirement opened a whole new opportunity for us; we're greatly enjoying the Dog Show world and value the friends we've made in this pursuit.

We breed for the sheer pleasure of producing outstanding puppies; ours is not a commercial pursuit. Our focus is on superbly socialized puppies raised in a home environment. Countless hours are invested with each litter ensuring that they are as well-adjusted as we can possibly make them.

Because of the outstanding quality of the Champion Sire and Dam of each litter, we expect to produce several show-quality puppies as well as a few marvelous pets. Typically, we keep one little girl from each litter for showing; she becomes a part of our family, and will be cherished and pampered for her whole life. The whole family will attend numerous shows as the new "baby" pursues her own Championship; our girls consider motels to be a great adventure.

Almost from birth, our Hounds are noted for their superb dispositions. They are marvelous family companions, and always stand out in the show ring. Once our own Hounds finish their Championships, they begin competing in the Rally ring, typically earning both their Rally Novice and Rally Advanced titles.

We currently have three Bassets:

  • Pineapple [CH Bugle Bay's Upside Down Cake RA CGC ROM] - 7 years old
  • Mango [CH Bugle Bay's High Desert Mango RA CGC] - 4 years old
  • Rhubarb [CH High Desert's Bugle Bay Rhubarb RA] - 2 years old

WHAT DO ALL THOSE LETTERS MEAN?

In addition to the well-known Conformation championships, the American Kennel Club (AKC) awards a number of other suffix titles to exceptional dogs, including:

CD
Companion Dog
CGC
Canine Good Citizen
RA
Rally Advanced
RN
Rally Novice
ROM
Register Of Merit
TD
Tracking Dog
UD
Utility Dog
The above titles always appear after the dog's registered name: eg, CH Bugle Bay's Upside Down Cake RA CGC ROM.
"CH" preceeding her registered name indicates that she is a Conformation CHampion...the best of the best. "RA" indicates Rally Advanced; "CGC" is the Canine Good Citizen award; and ROM is the Register of Merit award, indicating that she's produced at least five puppies who have received AKC titles (males must sire 7 or more titleholders to earn this title); the ROM is awarded by the Basset Hound Club of America and recognized by the AKC.
